The "People Speak"
Debate at the University of Louisville
"American Power and Global Security" was the theme of a students'
debate on October 19 at the University of Louisville, held as part of the
nationwide "The People Speak" debates sponsored by the UN
Foundation and the United Nations Association of the USA (UNAUSA).
Local sponsors of the debate, which concentrated on the role of
multilateralism in general and the United Nations in particular in current US foreign policy, were the University of Louisville Metro Rotoract Club and the Louisville Chapter of UNA. About seventy
students, faculty and local UNA members turned out for the event and
participated in the closing colloquium.
Convenor of the debate was Matt Hanka a U of L graduate student ,
Advocacy Chair of UNA/Louisville, and President of Rotoract.
John McGarrah, also a political science graduate
student and UNA member, was the moderator.
The two student debaters, Matt Evans of the U of L Peace and
Justice Committe and Anthony Cash of the campus
Republicans addressed questions on the advantages and disadvantages of
multilateralism, needed improvements in the UN system, the outlooks of the
two presidential candidates on balancing US international obligations with
US perceived national interests.
UNA/Louisville expresses its thanks for a grant provided
by the UN Foundation to support this and other "People Speak"
events around the USA.
Louisville Metro Council
Resolution Lauds UN on United Nations Day
The Louisville Metro Council has adopted the following resolution for
United Nations Day, October 24:
Whereas the UN was founded in 1945, and the anniversary
of the founding is observed each year on October 24; and
Whereas, the United States was one of the founding members of
the UN and continues to be a leader in supporting and encouraging economic
and social development, and enhancing human rights, especially those of women;
and
Whereas in September of 2000, 189 countries, including
the United States, agreed on the Millennium Development Goals, several of
which promote gender equality, the empowerment of women, and the
elimination of gender disparity in primary and secondary education; and,
Whereas, the problem of unequal treatment of women
leads to illiterate societies, poor maternal and child health, and overall
low levels of development worldwide; and,
Whereas , the US is a campion
of women's rights, most recently in its efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq;
and,
Now therefor, the
Louisville Metro Council, officially proclaims October 24, 2004, as United
Nations Day with the official theme of
"UN's Millenium
Development Goals: Focus on Women's Rights and Challenges," and
encourages Louisvillians to celebrate the
accomplishments of the United Nations.
